ARTS IN THE ALPS

I want to take a little of this letter to talk about the Arts in the Alps International Chamber Seminar [www.ArtsintheAlps.org].  In 2001 I began work on a music outreach in a village of 600 people outside of Innsbruck, Austria.  We had the unique opportunity to reach across cultural, linguistic, and spiritual boundaries to develop relationships with musicians in the midst of the Austrian Alps.  Several Innsbruck churches own a hotel where we meet in the village as a center for outreach.

Music at Maula Prison

Two weeks ago we were turned away after packing for an hour all the sound equipment and instruments for a jazz combo outreach to the prison.  They had testing and so didn't want us there even though we had cleared it with the bosses.

This time we were welcomed and we moved into a grassy (sort of) area between the holding side - those who are there prior to trial - and the convicted side.  There were probably 1000 lining the fences and in the enclosure we were playing in.
