VILLAGE OUTREACH

I am the driver for the village outreach this year. We head out over rather rotten roads to a village that is actually part of the city of Lilongwe - Chimoka. It isn't far, but half the trip is over very, very bad dirt roads...so we are using an old, barely reliable Prado. Always and adventure on whether we will get back.

We started last week, except that most of the group (including me) had not heard from our contact in the village (an ABC student) that they weren't ready for us. We entered the village and immediately went to the chief (Mfumu) to ask permission to once again lead Bible studies for the people there. He wasn't there and no one was ready for us, so we left a message with someone doing carpentry work outside his little hut that we would be back the next week.

Nuts & Bolts Projects

Jay Stoms, Professor of Theology at ABC, has begun work on a few very practical building projects here in Malawi.  I was filling in for Jay at Maula Prison last year while he was in the states.  He returned to find a Catholic priest who has been here since the 60s preparing to build a worship center and education building for the prisoners at Maula.

This priest is very keyed into Malawian life, having spent time in nearly every part of the country.  As an older gentleman (I think from Ireland) he has quite a zest for things and a real vision for ministering to Malawians.  When he found out I teach ethics at ABC he became quite animated and interested in sharing his thoughts on the "social conscience" of Malawi.
